WORSHIP

A Word on Worship Psalm 111:10 “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; all those who practice it have a good understanding. His praise endures forever!” Another word for fear is “awe.” What we fear, what we are most in awe of is ultimately what or whom we worship. Paul David Trip writes “Our hearts are always captured by something—that’s how God made us. But sin threatens to distract us from the glory of our Creator. All too often, we stand in awe of everything but God.” Our worship services are designed to redirect our awe back to the only one who deserves it, the Lord.

Scripture - Acts 4:32-37(ESV)

They Had Everything in Common

32 Now the full number of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and no one said that any of the things that belonged to him was his own, but they had everything in common. 33 And with great power the apostles were giving their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all. 34 There was not a needy person among them, for as many as were owners of lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was sold 35 and laid it at the apostles' feet, and it was distributed to each as any had need. 36 Thus Joseph, who was also called by the apostles Barnabas (which means son of encouragement), a Levite, a native of Cyprus, 37 sold a field that belonged to him and brought the money and laid it at the apostles' feet.

Discussion Questions:

  1. What do you think of when you hear the phrase “one heart and soul” together?

  2. What is the indication Luke mentions as evidence of the church’s unity in heart and soul?

  3. Why do you think Luke seems to “interrupt” his description of unity (v. 32,34-37) with the

  4. comment about the ministry of the apostles (v. 33)?

  5. How does the connection between unity and practical expression of unity relate to the power of ministry? Do you see that evidenced in our church?
